Why Concrete Surfaces Need Protection
Concrete, despite its reputation as a durable construction material, is inherently porous and susceptible to damage from a variety of environmental and operational factors. Types of Surface Treatments

Surface Hardeners and Densifiers
For industrial and commercial floors that must withstand heavy traffic, concrete hardeners and densifiers provide a durable, dust-proof surface. Lithium-based densifiers react with calcium hydroxide in the concrete to form calcium silicate hydrate (CSH), the same binder that gives concrete its strength. This reaction densifies the surface, reducing porosity, increasing abrasion resistance, and creating a polished, easy-to-clean finish. Densified and polished concrete floors have become increasingly popular in retail, warehouse, and showroom applications.
Protective Coatings
Where higher levels of chemical resistance or aesthetic requirements demand a surface film, protective coatings provide the solution. Epoxy, polyurethane, and acrylic coatings offer varying levels of protection and performance. Epoxy coatings provide exceptional chemical resistance and mechanical strength, making them ideal for industrial and laboratory environments. Polyurethane coatings offer superior UV stability and abrasion resistance, suitable for exposed and high-traffic areas. Acrylic coatings provide an economical solution for lighter-duty applications with good aesthetic properties.

Application and Maintenance
Proper surface preparation is the key to successful treatment application. Concrete must be clean, dry, and free of curing compounds, sealers, or other contaminants. Profile requirements vary by treatment type—penetrating sealers require less surface preparation than coatings, which may require mechanical profiling for adequate adhesion. Regular maintenance, including cleaning and periodic reapplication of wear layers, extends the life of the treatment system.
Inadequate surface preparation is the single most common cause of coating and sealer failure. Investing time and effort in proper cleaning, profiling, and drying of the concrete surface pays dividends in system longevity and performance.
